gretl Portable is an open-source program for econometric and statistical analysis. It explores datasets with summary statistics, frequency distributions and box plots, then estimates models using methods such as least squares, maximum likelihood and GMM. Time-series tools include ARMA, GARCH, VAR and VECM methods, alongside unit-root and cointegration tests. Scripts automate repeatable analyses, while results can be exported to LaTeX.

gretl Portable is an open-source econometrics and statistical analysis program for researchers, students and analysts working with economic or other numerical data. It combines tools for examining datasets, estimating statistical models and scripting repeatable analyses. Its graphical interface supports interactive work, while an integrated command language gives users a way to automate procedures and document their methods.
For initial data exploration, gretl can display dataset values and calculate summary statistics, frequency distributions and box plots. Users can edit values and attributes, add notes to a work log and define new variables for transformations or derived measures. These tools help prepare a dataset and assess its contents before estimation. The program supports common econometric approaches including least squares, maximum likelihood and generalized method of moments, with methods for both single equations and systems of equations.
The model library covers time-series analysis, including ARMA and GARCH models, VARs and VECMs, as well as unit-root and cointegration tests. It also includes methods for limited dependent variables, such as logit, probit, tobit, interval regression and models for count and duration data. Commands can be entered in the GUI or saved in scripts, making it possible to rerun an analysis consistently. Loop structures support Monte Carlo simulations and iterative estimation procedures.
Results can be exported to LaTeX as tables or equations, which is useful when preparing research papers and reports. A graph controller provides options for adjusting Gnuplot charts, and links to GNU R, GNU Octave and Ox allow data and analysis to be passed to other statistical or mathematical tools. The combination of interactive controls, scripts and export options accommodates both exploratory work and more structured research workflows.
The portable edition is intended for use without a conventional installation process. gretl is free and open-source software and runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as other Windows versions. Its interface is available in multiple languages. It is suited to econometric coursework, applied research and analysis of cross-sectional or time-series data; model choice and interpretation still depend on the analyst's statistical knowledge.
