Kangas Sound Editor creates music and sound effects from scratch using a cell-based, drag-and-drop workspace. It builds pitch from frequency ratios, supports a MIDI starting pitch, and lets users design melodic and percussion instruments from harmonics or inharmonics. Graphs shape properties such as volume, pitch and stereo balance. Projects can use WAV, AIFF and AU audio and export uncompressed WAV.

Kangas Sound Editor is a sound-design and music-creation program for building audio from scratch. It is aimed at experimenters who want to make melodies, instruments and sound effects without relying on conventional score notation. Its kangaroo-themed interface organizes a composition into movable cells or boxes, each representing an element such as a harmonic, instrument, chord group or other sound component. This structure lets users work with individual sound ingredients as well as larger musical groupings.
Pitch is controlled through frequency ratios rather than the equal-tempered note system common in many music applications. This makes the editor particularly suited to exploring just intonation and alternative tuning relationships. A MIDI pitch number can be set as a starting note, with other pitches defined relative to it. Instruments can be designed by specifying harmonics or inharmonics, including percussion and melodic sounds; these components can be saved in a database and reused in later projects.
The cell-based workflow is supported by user-definable graphs that control changing sound properties. For example, graphs can shape volume and pitch envelopes or alter the stereo balance over time. Users can arrange and adjust these elements through drag and drop, then combine them to form a complete composition or effect. The approach is built around experimentation with sound properties rather than entering notes on a conventional staff or piano roll.
The editor can render compositions to uncompressed WAV files. It can also use uncompressed AIFF, AU and WAV audio as input for recorded-sound boxes, allowing existing recordings to become part of a project. XML import and export provides a way to exchange project material and build on other users' work, supporting collaboration as well as reuse of compositions and components.
Kangas Sound Editor is open-source software for creating original music and sound effects, especially for users interested in synthesis, ratio-based tuning and hands-on sound design. Its workflow may take time to learn, but it does not require extensive music theory or notation knowledge. The published system requirements cover older Windows releases through Windows 8; compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11 should be checked before installation. Audio is handled through uncompressed file formats rather than a stated compressed-audio workflow.
