Adobe Shockwave Player is a browser plug-in for interactive content created with Adobe Director. It plays multimedia experiences such as 3D games, simulations, presentations, product demonstrations and educational activities within compatible web pages. The freeware player was made for Windows and Mac, but modern browsers generally no longer support the legacy plug-in technology it relies on.

Adobe Shockwave Player is a browser plug-in for viewing interactive web content made with Adobe Director. It was used for multimedia experiences that went beyond ordinary video or animation, including 3D games, simulations, product demonstrations, presentations and educational activities. The player is intended for people accessing older websites or applications that rely on Director content; it is not a tool for creating or editing that content.
When a compatible browser encounters Shockwave content, the plug-in handles its playback inside the web page. Director projects can combine visuals, sound and interactive elements, allowing visitors to explore a simulation, respond to prompts or play a game rather than simply watch a clip. Shockwave was also used for real-time 3D scenes, which supported activities such as exploring a virtual environment or interacting with objects in a learning application.
The format appeared in entertainment, business and education. Online games used it for interactive and 3D play, while demonstrations and learning materials used it to present scenarios that users could manipulate. Some projects combined Director content with assets created for other Adobe multimedia tools. Modular content could also be loaded in parts, a practical approach for larger web experiences on the connections and computers of the time.
Shockwave Player is freeware and was designed for Windows and Mac systems. The Windows requirements include Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or later, and Windows 8. Although Windows 10 appears among the supported systems, Windows 11 support is not established here. Shockwave is a legacy browser technology, and current browsers generally no longer support the plug-in interfaces it relies on. Installing the player therefore does not guarantee that Shockwave content will work in a modern browser; it is mainly relevant when accessing compatible legacy software or environments.
