Arena is a desktop chess interface for players who want to play against computer opponents, review games or run matches between chess engines. Rather than supplying a single playing engine, it connects to compatible UCI and Winboard engines, providing a board and controls for setting up and studying chess games. Its configurable layout can be adjusted to suit casual play as well as more detailed engine analysis.
The interface supports a large selection of engines, with playing strengths ranging from beginner-friendly to very strong; some engines allow their strength to be adjusted. During analysis, Arena can show engine lines and other details of the engine's calculations, helping users compare candidate moves and understand how a position is evaluated. Games can also be analysed automatically after they are played or loaded. For engine-versus-engine tournaments, Arena provides tools to arrange competitions and see how different engines perform against one another.
For human games, players can enter moves on the screen with straightforward move input and animated piece movement, or connect to an Internet chess server to play opponents online. Chess960 is supported alongside standard chess. The interface can display opening information and opening books, and an analysis board is available for examining positions. PGN support helps organize and work with game collections, while EPD support is intended for position databases. Games can be printed in a clearly arranged format.
Arena can also work with a DGT electronic chessboard and clock, allowing moves to be made with physical pieces while the computer communicates with a compatible engine. Other supported features include Autoplayer and connections to Internet Chess Servers. These options make the program useful both for ordinary computer chess and for more specialized workflows involving physical boards, engine testing or position study. Its multilingual interface and extensive help provide further support for users configuring engines and playing modes.
Arena is freeware from Martin Blume and is designed for Windows. It supports UCI and Winboard protocols, so compatible engines can be added to the interface rather than being limited to a built-in opponent. The supplied system information lists Windows XP through Windows 10, including 64-bit editions where applicable; Windows 11 compatibility is not established here. Engine capabilities and available features depend on the connected engine or hardware. The interface is suited to users who want one place to play, analyse, manage games and compare chess engines.
