ECMOjo

ECMOjo 2.4.1

An educational simulator for ECMO fundamentals

ECMOjo is a computer-based simulator for physicians, nurses and students learning the basics of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Its graphical interface illustrates how blood flows from the patient through an external circuit and membrane oxygenator, where gas exchange takes place, before returning to the body. It offers a way to study the core equipment and processes in a teaching or self-study setting, without replacing clinical instruction or hands-on training. The Java application is open source.

ECMOjo for Windows 10 - Full description

ECMOjo is a computer-based simulator and training tool for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intended for physicians, nurses and students learning the fundamentals of this intensive-care technique. Its graphical interface provides a way to explore how ECMO supports patients when the heart or lungs cannot adequately perform their functions, without working with clinical equipment or a patient.

The simulator focuses on the basic components and processes involved in ECMO. Learners can follow how blood is accessed through cannulae placed in large vessels, moved through an extracorporeal circuit and passed through a membrane oxygenator. The oxygenator models the gas exchange normally performed by the lungs: oxygen is added to the blood and carbon dioxide is removed before the blood returns to the patient. By representing this circulation visually, ECMOjo helps connect the equipment and its role in cardiac and respiratory support.

ECMOjo also provides an educational setting for understanding the procedure as a coordinated system rather than as a collection of separate devices. Its interface can support classroom demonstrations, individual study and discussion of core ECMO concepts. The simulation is intended to teach basics; it does not replace clinical training, professional judgment or guidance from qualified medical educators.

ECMO is used in intensive care when severe heart or lung disease or injury prevents those organs from providing sufficient support. The technique relies on an external machine that continuously circulates blood, while anticoagulant medication helps reduce clot formation in the circuit. ECMOjo gives learners a computer-based means of becoming familiar with these central ideas and the general path blood takes through the system.

The application is implemented in Java and is open source. It was developed by the Telehealth Research Institute at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii. ECMOjo is intended for Windows, with additional operating systems supported by the project, including macOS, Linux and UNIX. As an educational simulator, it is most useful as a companion to formal instruction in critical care and ECMO practice.
