EF Talk Scriber combines a text editor with an audio player for transcribing recorded speech. It is intended for people who type dictation or other spoken material from audio files and want to control playback and write in one application rather than switching between separate tools.
The player handles common audio formats, including WAV, MP3, Ogg/Vorbis and FLAC. As a recording plays, the user can type the spoken words directly into the editor. Keyboard shortcuts provide access to the usual editing and playback functions, and their assignments can be customized to suit an individual transcription routine. This makes it possible to keep hands on the keyboard while working through a recording.
A distinguishing feature is support for hot links between text and sound. These links connect written material with audio, helping keep the transcript and recording associated during the transcription process. The editor also provides the functions expected of a full text editor, so the transcript can be entered and edited within the same workspace used to listen to the source file.
EF Talk Scriber can be used for personal dictation, interview transcripts, meeting notes and other work based on recorded speech. Its combination of playback, text editing and keyboard control is especially suited to users who regularly transcribe audio and prefer a keyboard-driven workflow. Support for Unicode characters is available in editions for Windows XP, Vista and 7; this does not establish Unicode support for newer editions.
The software is trialware from Emil Fickel and is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as several earlier Windows releases. Its compact download contains the editor and audio player in one application. Users can try the workflow before deciding whether to continue using the software under its trialware terms.
