FreeMat is an open-source numerical computing environment for engineering, scientific prototyping and data processing. Its MATLAB-like language supports many MATLAB functions and some IDL functionality, with matrix and array operations, scripts, functions, plotting and 3D visualization. It can also load shared libraries and connect to C, C++ and Fortran code, with MPI support for parallel distributed algorithms.

FreeMat is an open-source numerical computing environment for engineering, scientific prototyping and data processing. It provides a MATLAB-like language and supports many MATLAB functions, along with some IDL functionality. Researchers, engineers and students can use it to express calculations as scripts and work with numerical data without relying on a commercial system.
The language includes matrix and array operations, including element-wise arithmetic, matrix multiplication, division, powers, comparisons and logical operators. Arrays can be indexed and organized as structures or cell arrays. Functions and scripts support features such as anonymous functions, variable input and output arguments, and persistent or global variables, making it possible to build reusable calculations and organize larger projects. Conditional statements, loops and error-handling constructs are available for controlling program flow and responding to problems during execution.
For examining results, FreeMat includes plotting and three-dimensional visualization capabilities. These tools help users inspect computed data and explore mathematical or scientific models visually. The environment can also load shared libraries written in other languages, and provides a codeless interface to external C, C++ and Fortran code. This allows existing routines to be brought into a FreeMat workflow without rewriting them in its own language. MPI support provides a route for developing parallel, distributed algorithms.
FreeMat can be used for exploring numerical methods, building engineering prototypes, processing data, and testing algorithms before incorporating them into a larger application. Its combination of array-based calculations, visualization and links to compiled code suits projects that need both interactive mathematical work and connections to established software components. Documentation covers language syntax, operators, functions, scripts and control flow.
The software is free and released under the GNU General Public License. Windows releases are available for a range of Windows versions, including Windows 10. The project is aimed at users comfortable with mathematical programming; it is not a general-purpose office or data-entry application. Compatibility with newer Windows releases should be checked against the available build before installation.
