Ircam Trax is a suite of three audio processors for transforming voices and other sounds. It is intended for musicians, sound designers and audio professionals who want to reshape pitch, timbre, duration and other sound characteristics with spectral processing. Its three processors use different approaches to transform or combine audio, from changing the qualities of a voice to blending the spectral structure of two sounds.
TRAX Transformer uses an augmented phase vocoder and a transformation algorithm to modify characteristics such as gender, age and breath in a voice. It can also alter expression, formants and pitch, and its processing applies to non-vocal sounds as well. These controls make it possible to change the perceived character of a recording while working with its tonal and expressive qualities, rather than limiting changes to straightforward pitch shifting. The processor is suited to detailed voice treatment as well as broader sound-design work.
TRAX Cross Synthesis combines the spectral characteristics of two sounds. It works with their amplitude and frequency or phase spectra, allowing those components to be blended continuously. Because the spectral features are handled nonlinearly, the results can move beyond a simple mixture of the two sources, producing shifting timbres and unusual effects. This approach is useful for turning contrasting recordings into hybrid sounds, or for exploring transitions between source materials.
TRAX Source Filter separates a sound into an energy contour, which describes changes in loudness over time, and a spectral envelope, which describes its tonal colour. The processor lets these properties be blended with the corresponding energy contour and spectral colour of a separate filtering sound. This provides independent control over how the source's dynamics and timbre are reshaped, enabling more varied results than conventional source-filter morphing. Together, the three processors cover voice transformation, spectral cross-synthesis and source-filter processing in a single suite.
