PyMCA 5.5.5

X-ray fluorescence analysis toolkit

PyMca is an open-source suite for analyzing energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence data, developed by the Software Group of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Its desktop applications support spectrum visualization and analysis, while the Python toolkit exposes analysis routines for custom workflows. PyMca can read data files and access SPEC shared memory to monitor compatible acquisitions as they run.

PyMCA for Windows 10 - Full description

PyMca is an open-source software suite for analyzing energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data. Developed by the Software Group of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, it is intended for researchers and laboratory teams working with X-ray measurements. The package combines ready-to-use analysis applications with a Python toolkit, so it can serve both users who work through a graphical interface and developers building their own data workflows.

The graphical tools support the inspection and analysis of fluorescence spectra. Users can load measurement data, view spectral signals and apply analysis routines to interpret the recorded X-ray energies. Spectrum fitting helps separate overlapping contributions and estimate the elements represented in a measurement, supporting qualitative and quantitative XRF work. The tools are designed around common needs in fluorescence data analysis rather than general-purpose charting.

PyMca can also be used to process collections of data and to monitor measurements during acquisition. In addition to reading data files, it can access SPEC shared memory, allowing compatible setups to display incoming data without waiting for acquisition to finish. This is useful when checking an experiment as it runs or reviewing a set of measurements after collection. The available analysis routines can be used independently of the graphical interface, which lets technical users incorporate them into Python-based workflows.

For developers, the PyMca Toolkit provides Python tools for visualizing and analyzing energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence data. Its interface and plotting components use Qt and Qwt through the PyQt and PyQwt bindings, while the analysis routines do not require a GUI. This separation makes it possible to use the same core analysis capabilities in custom applications or automated processing scripts, as well as in PyMca's own desktop tools.

PyMca is suited to research and instrumentation work involving XRF spectra, including interactive data review, analysis, acquisition monitoring and custom software development. It is open source and available for 64-bit Windows 10. Working with SPEC shared memory requires a compatible acquisition environment; ordinary file-based analysis does not depend on that feature. Its specialized focus makes it most relevant to users who already work with X-ray fluorescence data.
