MayaVi for Windows

MayaVi for Windows 1.5

Python-based scientific data visualization

MayaVi is an open-source scientific visualization application built with Python and VTK. It displays computational grids and scalar, vector and tensor data, with support for volume rendering, data filters and time-series files. The pipeline browser lets users inspect and edit visualization objects, while interactive picking, lookup-table controls and lighting adjustments help explore results. It reads several VTK formats, plus supported PLOT3D and EnSight data, and exports images and 3D scene files. Python integration supports scripting and custom modules.

MayaVi for Windows for Windows 10 - Full description

MayaVi is an open-source scientific visualization application for researchers, engineers and developers working with three-dimensional data. Written in Python and built on the Visualization Toolkit (VTK), it provides a graphical interface for examining datasets as well as options for automation. Users can also import MayaVi into Python programs or control it from the Python interpreter, making it useful both for interactive exploration and scripted workflows.

The program visualizes computational grids and scalar, vector and tensor fields. Its modules turn data into graphical representations that can be inspected and compared, while a collection of filters supports preparation and transformation within the visualization workflow. Volume rendering is available through texture-based and ray-cast mappers. Multiple datasets and visualization modules can be active together, which helps when comparing results or assembling a view from several sources. Data files that belong to a time series are also supported.

MayaVi reads VTK datasets in the original and XML formats, including rectilinear, structured and unstructured grids, as well as polygonal data. It also handles PLOT3D binary structured grids and EnSight6 and EnSightGold files, with limitations for some formats and dataset types. A pipeline browser exposes the VTK processing pipeline so users can inspect and edit its objects; its segmented layout makes individual portions easier to navigate. Interactive data picking helps probe values in the rendered scene, and the lookup-table editor and lighting controls provide ways to adjust how results appear. The modular design allows custom modules and filters to be added.

For reuse and sharing, a visualization or part of one can be saved for later. MayaVi can export scenes as images, including PPM, BMP, TIFF, JPEG and PNG, and as formats such as PostScript, Open Inventor, Geomview OOGL, VRML, Wavefront OBJ and RenderMan RIB. Vector-graphic export through GL2PS is available when the installed VTK build includes that support. Simple VRML and 3D Studio scenes can be imported; VRML texturing is not supported by the importer used by the program.

MayaVi is distributed under the BSD license and is designed to run wherever Python and VTK are available, including Windows systems. Both are required for its visualization functions, and the available capabilities can depend on how VTK was built. Its combination of a desktop interface, Python integration and broad scientific data handling suits exploratory analysis, repeatable visualization scripts and preparation of figures or scene files for reports and collaboration.
