Microsoft Copilot is an AI chat assistant for people who want help with writing, research, learning, coding and everyday information tasks. Its Windows app provides a desktop route to Copilot without requiring a browser, and connects the assistant with Microsoft account features and services such as Office and OneDrive. It can also work with local files, making it useful for both general questions and tasks involving documents or other content on a PC.
The chat interface keeps conversations and generated pages in a retractable sidebar, so users can return to earlier work while starting new requests. Copilot can draft and revise text, brainstorm ideas, generate code and visuals, and gather information. Its different modes suit different tasks: Search aims to return quick answers, Think Deeper supports prompts that call for more analysis, and Study and Learn takes a guided approach to learning. Deep Research can prepare more detailed reports with references, which can help when exploring a topic beyond a quick search.
For document work, Copilot can search, summarize and analyze files, helping users get oriented in material without reading every item from beginning to end. Screen sharing gives the assistant additional context about what is on display. Voice interaction is available through a wake phrase, and the app can also be opened with the Win + C shortcut. These options let users move between typed questions, spoken requests and tasks based on on-screen or file content.
Typical uses include drafting emails and other office documents, summarizing files, organizing information, exploring unfamiliar subjects and getting assistance with programming. Study and Learn is suited to guided review, while Deep Research is intended for assembling a more thorough account of a subject. The desktop edition centers on chat and Pages for writing and processing documents; features available in the web experience, such as Projects and Discover, are not part of the desktop app described here.
Copilot is freeware and requires a Microsoft account for sign-in. The desktop app is available for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its focus on AI assistance can be useful in work and home settings, though users who prefer a lightweight Windows environment may not want additional assistant integrations. Its value depends on whether chat, file analysis, voice input and Microsoft-service connections fit their everyday workflow.
