OnionHop is a Windows application for routing internet traffic through the Tor network. It is intended for people who want to add Tor routing to their system connection, including users who need a choice of tunneling method or are connecting from regions where access to Tor may be restricted. The app offers proxy, VPN and Hybrid modes, each suited to different compatibility and privacy needs.
Proxy mode routes traffic through Tor using a proxy configuration and can be a practical starting point for everyday browsing. VPN mode uses TUN tunneling to handle traffic at a broader system level; its more conservative routing approach is designed to reduce the risk of DNS requests escaping the tunnel. Hybrid mode provides an alternative when either proxy or VPN mode interferes with other applications. These modes affect how traffic is routed, so users can select the one that best fits their setup and the apps they need to use.
The connection can use an automatically selected Tor exit location or one chosen manually from a list. Automatic selection is useful when the priority is a working connection without choosing a location, while manual selection gives users more control over where traffic exits the Tor network. As with Tor generally, the exit location is not a guarantee of a particular browsing speed or access to every service; websites may also apply their own restrictions to Tor connections.
Censored Network Mode is intended for networks that restrict Tor access. It combines Secure DNS with SNI bridges to provide another route into the network, and OnionHop includes bridges while also allowing custom bridge details. This gives users an additional configuration option when a standard Tor connection cannot be established. The choice of mode and bridge can be adjusted to suit the network, although the results depend on local filtering and connection conditions.
OnionHop is open-source software for 64-bit editions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its combination of guided connection modes and configurable routing makes it suitable for both straightforward Tor use and troubleshooting access on restrictive networks. Tor routing can improve privacy by separating a connection from the user's direct network address, but it does not by itself make all online activity anonymous: accounts, browser settings, and information shared with websites can still identify a user. The application is free to use, with no paid license required.
