Portable D-Fend Reloaded is a graphical front end for DOSBox, designed to help organize and launch DOS games without requiring users to configure DOSBox text files by hand. It suits players maintaining a collection of classic DOS titles, including games with more involved settings, and provides a central place to keep each game's launch configuration and related files. The package includes DOSBox, its available language files and FreeDOS command-line tools, with initial setup handled when the program starts.
Each game is managed through a profile that stores its program location and related resources, such as screenshots, manuals and icon files. A profile editor and a wizard support setup, while templates for different game types can reduce the information needed to create a new entry to the game name and path. Once configured, games can be launched from the profile list rather than by repeatedly entering DOSBox commands. The software can also start games from disk images and accommodate a range of DOS game types, including titles with 3D graphics.
For larger collections, D-Fend Reloaded provides sorting and filters, including categories such as genre and publication year. Its find-as-you-type search narrows the list as text is entered, making it easier to locate a title among many profiles. Users can import existing D-Fend or DBFrondend configuration files, as well as DOSBox CONF files, ZIP and 7Z archives, and folders. Lists of games can be exported as TXT, CSV, HTML or XML, while profiles and game files can also be exported or packaged for archiving and transfer.
Profile-based management helps keep a game's executable and supporting materials together. Complete games can be removed through the program or copied between installations; built-in ZIP and 7Z support can package games for storage or transfer. D-Fend Reloaded can also create installer packages for moving games to another computer, a feature that requires NSIS. Its language selection is connected to the DOSBox keyboard layout, which is set to match the selected program language.
The portable edition is intended to run without adding files to the hard drive or making changes to the Windows registry, and can be removed without leaving program traces. D-Fend Reloaded is open-source software for Windows, with Windows 10 included among the supported systems. It provides a graphical way to manage DOSBox game profiles; DOSBox remains the component that runs the games. The included tools and automatic setup make it useful for people who want to maintain a playable DOS game library without configuring every title from scratch.
