Trout for Windows 10 - Full description

Trout is a lightweight audio player for people who want straightforward playback without a heavily themed interface. It uses standard controls and is designed for quickly opening individual tracks or playlists. Its broad format support and tag handling make it useful for collections that include more than common MP3 and WAV files, while features such as hotkeys and external control provide ways to operate it without relying only on the main window.

The player handles AIFF, MP1, MP2, MP3, OGA, OGG, WAV and several tracker formats, including MOD, XM, S3M and IT. Additional formats are available through plugins, including FLAC, WMA, MIDI, AAC, MP4, M4A, APE, AC3, TTA, MPC and ALAC. This lets users play a varied local library from one application, although plugin-dependent formats require the relevant plugins. Trout reads common embedded metadata, including ID3, Vorbis comments, WMA, APEv2 and MP4-family tags, and offers simple tag editing for supported files.

Playback can be started from a file or playlist, with repeat-file, repeat-list, random and shuffle modes for different listening patterns. Internet radio streams are supported, and basic freeDB lookup can show track titles from audio CDs. For audiobook listening, track announcements help identify what is playing. Basic album art is read from a folder.jpg file, while a popup notification can show track information without keeping the full player in view.

Trout can be operated through customizable hotkeys, command-line actions for play, stop, previous, next and mute, or the WinampAPI for compatible external controls and displays. Compact horizontal and vertical minibar controls provide a smaller interface when desktop space is limited. Last.fm and Libre.fm scrobbling can record listening activity on those services. Together, these options suit users who want a simple player that can also fit into established desktop workflows.

Trout is freeware from Skwire Empire. It was built around the BASS audio engine and is intended for Windows; the stated operating-system support includes Windows XP through Windows 10. Some features, including tag editing and certain tag formats, are unavailable on Windows 9x/ME, and some audio formats depend on plugins. The application is suited to local music libraries, playlists, internet radio and audiobook tracks rather than a full media-management suite.
