Comskip for Windows 10 - Full description

Comskip is a Windows console utility that analyzes recorded video and identifies likely commercial breaks. It is intended for people who want to review or skip advertising in MPEG recordings, or pass detected break positions to video-editing and playback tools. Rather than editing the recording itself, it produces a separate file containing the locations of detected commercials.

The analysis is based on configurable parameters, allowing detection behavior to be adjusted for different recordings. Comskip reads video and audio information from supported files and examines the content to find possible transitions into and out of commercials. The resulting break markers can then be used by compatible applications, rather than requiring users to locate each break manually.

Output formats cover several kinds of workflow. Personal video applications such as SageTV and GBPVR can use generated input files; interactive editors such as VideoRedo, Cuttermaran and Mpeg2Schnitt can use the markers when editing; and command-line cutters including mpgtx and mencoder can use them to process recordings. Video players such as Zoom Player and MPlayer are also among the supported destinations. The choice of output depends on the application used after analysis.

Comskip supports MPEG and H.264 video, with MPEG-2, AC-3 and AAC audio, in program stream (PS), transport stream (TS) and DVR-MS files. Its stated processing range extends to HD resolutions up to 2000 by 1200 pixels and frame rates of 25 fps for PAL or 29.97 fps for NTSC. H.264 support is identified as beta and is available to donors, so MPEG recordings are the more established use case.

The program is freeware and runs as a Windows console application, making it suited to users comfortable working with files and command-line tools. It is available for Windows systems including Windows 10 and Windows 11. Comskip detects and records commercial positions; a separate compatible player, editor or cutter is needed to use those positions for playback or editing.
