Digsby is a desktop communication client that brings instant messaging, email notifications and social network updates into one interface. It is intended for people who use several chat services or online accounts and want to check activity without opening each service separately. A combined buddy list gathers contacts from supported messaging accounts, while email and social network activity appear in dedicated areas of the program.
For instant messaging, Digsby connects to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber and Facebook Chat. Its unified buddy list can combine multiple accounts belonging to the same contact, reducing duplicate entries, and lets users assign aliases that are easier to recognize than account names. Status can be changed from the list, and an InfoBox provides a quick view of contacts' status messages and profiles. Conversations can be managed in tabbed windows, with tabs detachable into separate windows when a chat needs more space. Pop-up alerts allow a quick reply without restoring the main conversation window, and a searchable log viewer stores conversation history. The client can also send SMS messages from an IM window.
Email support covers Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail, IMAP and POP accounts. Digsby displays alerts for new mail and offers a summary of unread messages in its email InfoBox. From there, supported actions include marking a message as read or reporting it as spam; selecting a notification can open the message, with automatic login for webmail accounts. Email can also be sent from an IM window using an account tracked by the program. These tools make Digsby useful for monitoring several inboxes alongside ongoing conversations.
The social networking features connect Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn accounts. Notifications cover activity such as messages, friend requests and group invitations, while a live newsfeed brings updates, photos and birthday information into the client. Users can update their Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn statuses from Digsby.
