Elyse for Windows 10 - Full description
Elyse is a freeware file management system for people who want to organize large collections by meaning rather than by storage location. Instead of relying on a fixed hierarchy of folders, it uses tags and tag nodes to group files. This lets users decide how a collection should be organized and revise that structure later without moving the underlying files or changing their storage paths.
Tag nodes are arranged in trees and act as reusable views of files associated with particular tags. A single file can appear in several overlapping groups, so a photo might belong to both a family collection and a set of holiday pictures without creating extra copies. Users can build different arrangements for the same collection, then browse those arrangements much like folder trees. The nodes are saved views rather than separate storage locations, keeping organization flexible as projects or categories change.
Elyse can also represent relationships between tags. For example, tags for lions, ostriches and elephants can be grouped under a broader animal concept. A node based on that relationship can gather files tagged with those specific animal types, without requiring the broad animal tag to be added to every file. For assigning tags, users can drag and drop multiple files onto tags in one action. Associations can also be removed in batches through a dialog, which is useful when reorganizing a large collection.
For an existing archive, Elyse can migrate folder structures into a database and populate that database with large numbers of files. This offers a way to move from folder-based organization to tag-based browsing without assigning every file individually. Duplicate management is automatic, helping prevent repeated files from accumulating as collections are imported or organized. The system is suited to photo libraries, research material, and other collections that fit more than one useful category.
Elyse is freeware for Windows, with support for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Its central workflow is based on organizing files through tags and database-backed nodes rather than choosing a permanent folder location. The tag hierarchy can be reshaped as needs change, while the files remain stored independently of the way they are grouped in Elyse.
