Java Runtime Environment 64bit

Java Runtime Environment 64bit 10.0.2

Runtime for Java applications on Windows

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 64-bit lets Windows run applications written in Java. It includes the Java Virtual Machine, which executes Java code, and standard libraries used by Java programs. The runtime is useful when an application requires Java, but it does not include the tools for developing and compiling Java software. Older JRE components supported browser applets and network-delivered applications; major browsers no longer support Java plug-ins.

Java Runtime Environment 64bit for Windows 10 - Full description

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 64-bit provides the components Windows needs to run software written in the Java programming language. It is intended for people who use Java applications and need the runtime rather than tools for developing Java code. At its core is the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which executes Java bytecode, along with standard libraries that applications use for common tasks such as handling data, files, networking and user interfaces.

When a Java application starts, the runtime loads its program files and required libraries, then the JVM executes the code. This lets compatible applications run without each one having to include its own copy of the Java platform. Some programs may also rely on particular runtime components or settings, so installing the JRE can resolve a missing-Java requirement reported by an application. It does not provide a full development environment for writing and compiling Java programs.

The JRE has also supported Java applets and network-delivered standalone applications through Java Plug-in and Java Web Start technologies. These capabilities were designed to let applets run in compatible browsers and to launch applications distributed over a network. Browser support for Java plug-ins has since been discontinued by major browsers, so the plug-in is not a practical way to run Java content on today's web. Standalone Java software is generally run through its own launcher or an available Java runtime mechanism.

Typical uses include running desktop utilities, business applications and other programs whose requirements specify a Java runtime. It can also be relevant when maintaining older software built around Java. The JRE supplies the execution environment; an application's own compatibility, configuration and required Java version still determine whether it will work correctly. Users should install Java only when an application needs it and keep the runtime maintained, since software that executes code can be affected by security vulnerabilities.

This 64-bit edition is from Oracle and is freeware. The provided system information includes 64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10, as well as Windows 11. A 64-bit runtime is appropriate for compatible 64-bit applications; some older 32-bit programs may require a separate 32-bit Java runtime instead. Installing a runtime does not guarantee that every Java application or legacy browser feature will work on a current Windows system.
