ScanDir is a portable Windows utility for finding and managing files and folders across drives. It is suited to users who need to locate items by several criteria, perform changes on groups of results, or prepare a searchable inventory without relying on Windows Explorer alone. Its portable format makes it practical to run from removable storage or keep alongside other desktop tools.
Searches can be narrowed by file or folder name, path, extension, size, and date. Regular-expression support provides a way to describe more specific name or path patterns when ordinary criteria are not sufficient. After a search, users can select matching entries and delete, rename, copy, or move them. This approach is useful for applying the same operation to a group of files rather than handling each item individually.
Renaming tools include automatic numbering, adding one or more path levels, finding and replacing characters, and changing extensions. ScanDir can also calculate MD5 and CRC32 checksums as part of its rename options. These features support structured naming and can be used to generate Bates numbers based on checksums and/or timestamps. During copy or move operations, a limited set of rename options is available, allowing names to be adjusted as items are transferred. The utility can also modify file dates.
Search results can be printed as a report or a list, or exported to plain text and CSV files. CSV output can be brought into spreadsheet software for sorting, filtering, and further review. These reporting options make ScanDir useful for file audits, locating dated or oversized items, organizing project folders, and producing records of files found across a drive.
ScanDir is freeware for Windows and is provided as a portable application. Its stated system requirement is Windows with a screen resolution of at least 800 by 600 pixels. The interface language is English. Users should review search results before applying bulk deletion or other file operations, particularly when searches use broad criteria.
