AVG Internet Security is a Windows security suite for protecting 64-bit PCs against malware and online threats. It combines antivirus and antispyware functions with safeguards for email, web browsing, downloads, file sharing and social-network links. Its layered approach checks content at several points, including before files are opened and web pages are visited, helping reduce the chance of malicious software reaching the system or sensitive information being exposed during online activity.
The antivirus and Resident Shield monitor files to detect, stop and remove viruses, worms, trojans and other malware. Anti-Rootkit targets rootkits, which can conceal malicious components and attempt to gain control of a computer. Email Scanner checks incoming attachments for infections or suspicious content. It works with Microsoft Outlook and can scan mail handled through POP3, SMTP and IMAP accounts, giving users a way to inspect messages from different email setups.
For web use, LinkScanner Surf-Shield checks pages before a user opens them and can block sites it considers suspicious or unsafe. Social Networking Protection checks links shared through services such as Facebook and Twitter. Online Shield checks downloads and files exchanged through instant messaging services including MSN, Yahoo and ICQ.
