BatchRename is a file-renaming utility for people who need to apply consistent changes to many files or folders at once. Rather than editing names one by one, users build rules and apply them to a selected list, with options for ordinary text changes as well as names assembled from file information. It is suited to organizing music, photos, and other collections whose filenames need a predictable format.
Rules can draw on metadata as well as existing names. For music, BatchRename reads ID3 tags, including title, album, artist, genre, bitrate, and composer, so tracks can be renamed using the details embedded in their tags. For photos, it can use EXIF information such as capture date, camera, exposure, aperture, ISO, or GPS data. Image dimensions, color depth, and format are also available. Windows shell details, including properties for audio and video files, provide another source of information when building names.
Other rules handle common cleanup and numbering tasks. The program can change letter case, remove selected characters, truncate names to a chosen length, and add ascending or descending digit sequences or random numbers. Rules can use file dates or local date and time formats, and renamed files can be sent to a different output folder. Favorite rules can be saved for reuse, helping make repeated filing tasks more consistent. BatchRename also includes options for filename processing with RC4, Base64, and MD5 algorithms.
Files can be added by dragging them into the rename list, or selected in Windows Explorer and opened through the program's shell context-menu command. QuickView displays or plays selected pictures, videos, and music, and shows relevant properties such as EXIF data, ID3 tags, and Windows shell details. This lets users inspect a file and choose suitable metadata before creating a rule. Photo workflows can also include batch conversion and resizing, described as operations available in a few clicks.
BatchRename is freeware from foryoursoft.com. Its Explorer integration and metadata-based rules make it useful for organizing camera imports, renaming tagged music libraries, and applying standard naming schemes to mixed file collections. The supplied operating-system information covers Windows XP through Windows 8; Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility is not established here. Users should check compatibility with their current Windows setup before relying on it for a regular workflow.
