Shape audio attacks with transient processing

Flux:: BitterSweet II is a freeware transient processor for audio mixing. Its central control reduces transient amplitude toward Sweet or increases it toward Bitter. Users can process the stereo signal, or select Mid or Side processing for stereo material. Three detection modes, adjustable integration periods, and output gain linking provide additional control. It supports up to eight channels and sample rates up to 384 kHz.

Flux:: BitterSweet II for Windows 10 - Full description

Flux:: BitterSweet II is a transient processor for shaping the attack of sounds in a mix. It is designed for audio producers and engineers who want to make drums, percussion, plucked instruments, or other sharply articulated sounds feel softer or more pronounced without relying on a conventional compressor. Its central control provides a direct way to move between these two effects, making the plug-in useful for focused adjustments as well as quick changes during mixing.

Turning the control toward Sweet reduces transient amplitude, softening the initial impact of a sound. Moving it toward Bitter increases transient amplitude, bringing attacks forward and adding definition. The processing control selects whether the effect is applied to the stereo signal as a whole or, in stereo operation, to the Mid or Side component of an internal Mid/Side matrix. Mid processing targets the shared center of the image, while Side processing adjusts its stereo width components; these options can help shape attack without affecting the entire stereo field in the same way.

Three transient-detection modes let users choose how the processor identifies attacks, and adjustable integration periods provide further control over the timing of transient processing. A Link function compensates output gain in relation to the transient setting, helping keep level changes in check while comparing different amounts of processing. The plug-in uses 64-bit floating-point processing and supports up to eight channels and sample rates up to 384 kHz. Mid and Side modes are available only for stereo, two-channel processing.

In practical use, BitterSweet II can soften percussion that feels too sharp, reduce the attack of a track that dominates a mix, or emphasize drum hits and other transients that need more presence. Its polarity of control makes it possible to move quickly between attenuation and enhancement, while the detection and integration options allow finer adjustment to different material. The Mid/Side choices provide an additional way to address stereo content when working with a two-channel signal.

BitterSweet II is freeware and requires neither registration nor an iLok dongle. It is available as a native VST plug-in for Windows, with support listed for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11. The plug-in also has AU and RTAS formats for their respective audio software environments; those formats are not Windows VST alternatives. It is intended for use inside a compatible digital audio workstation or host that supports VST plug-ins.
