Portable TrueCrypt creates encrypted file containers that mount as drives, letting users work with protected files through normal file operations. It can also encrypt partitions, removable storage, and Windows system drives with pre-boot authentication. Encryption and decryption occur as data is read or written, with AES, Serpent, and Twofish available. The discontinued project no longer receives security updates.

Portable TrueCrypt is a disk-encryption utility for people who need to protect files on a computer or removable storage. It creates encrypted storage that can be opened as a mounted drive, allowing applications and file managers to work with protected files much as they do with ordinary folders and disks. Its portable form is intended for use without a conventional installation, making it suitable for carrying the utility between compatible systems.
The program can create a virtual encrypted disk inside a file. After mounting the container with its password, users can copy files into it, edit them, and access them from other applications; unmounting it closes the volume and leaves its contents encrypted. TrueCrypt encrypts data as it is written and decrypts it as it is read, so the full contents do not need to be manually processed before use. It can also encrypt entire partitions and storage devices, including USB flash drives and hard drives, for protection of data stored outside the computer.
For stronger system-level protection, TrueCrypt can encrypt the partition or drive containing Windows and require authentication before the operating system starts. Its hidden-volume and hidden-operating-system features are designed to provide plausible deniability: a hidden volume can be placed inside an encrypted volume, while a hidden operating system offers a separate concealed environment. These features involve additional setup and are intended for specialized privacy requirements rather than routine file storage.
Encryption options include AES, Serpent, and Twofish, with XTS as the mode of operation. Parallel processing and pipelining are used to keep encrypted reading and writing practical, while encryption and decryption happen transparently during normal file operations. Typical uses include keeping sensitive documents in a password-protected container, securing files on a removable drive, and encrypting a computer drive against access when the device is powered off.
TrueCrypt was freeware and supports Windows systems through Windows 10, as well as Linux and Mac OS X according to its platform range. The project was discontinued, so it no longer receives maintenance or security updates. That makes it legacy software; users choosing encryption for new or sensitive deployments should consider a currently maintained alternative and verify that it meets their security needs. Portable builds may also require suitable permissions to mount encrypted volumes.
