ThreatSentry is a host intrusion prevention and web application firewall for Microsoft IIS servers. It is intended for administrators who need to monitor web requests and block suspicious activity at the server, including threats that may evade conventional signature and rule-based defenses. The software installs as an ISAPI filter and is managed through a snap-in for Microsoft Management Console (MMC), placing its monitoring and security controls alongside other server administration tools.
The detection system compares incoming requests with a threat knowledge base and an evolving baseline of expected server behavior. This combined approach is designed to identify both recognized attack patterns and unusual activity. ThreatSentry targets risks such as directory traversal, parameter manipulation, buffer overflows, parser evasion, high-bit shellcode, printer protocol attacks and Remote Data Services vulnerabilities. Administrators can review alerts and configure responses such as blocking an IP address, either when an incident occurs or in advance through security policies.
An integrated firewall can block network ports for addresses on the blocked list, extending protection beyond individual web requests.
