AstroGrep is a Windows grep utility for finding text inside files. It suits developers, system administrators, and other users who need to locate words, phrases, or patterns across source code and document collections. Rather than opening files one by one, users choose a search location and file types, enter a search expression, and review matching lines in a results list.
Searches can use ordinary text or regular expressions supported by Microsoft .NET. Regular expressions help find variations of a pattern, such as identifiers with a shared structure, while whole-word matching restricts results to complete words. AstroGrep can search recursively through directories and include multiple file types in one search, making it practical for checking a project tree or a set of folders without running separate searches for each extension.
For each match, the context feature displays lines above and below the result, which helps show how a term is used without opening the file. Users can also view the full file; syntax highlighting is available when the file extension is supported. A results summary gives an overview of the matches. From a result, a right-click action can open the file in a preferred editor at the matching line, provided that editor supports opening files at a specified line.
Search results can be saved or printed, either in full or as a selection. The preview area's colors can be customized for readability. AstroGrep also keeps recently used search paths, file types, and search text, helping users repeat routine searches without entering the same settings again. These features support tasks such as finding a function in source code, locating configuration values, checking a collection of text files, or reviewing where a particular term appears across a directory.
AstroGrep is free and open source. It is designed for Microsoft Windows and uses Microsoft .NET regular expressions. Its workflow is centered on searching file contents and reviewing text matches; proposed capabilities such as searching inside PDFs, media tags, or archives are not part of the stated feature set.
