ScanFS is a Windows file-search utility for people who need to locate documents and other files across one or more folders. It searches both filenames and file contents, making it useful when the name or location of a file is unclear. Searches can target a single directory or a group of directories, and multiple filename patterns can be combined to narrow down the results.
Searches can use simple text or regular expressions, with options for matching either filenames or the contents of files. A live preview shows file contents without requiring the file system to be scanned again, while a separate image preview helps identify pictures from the results. Full Unicode support covers filenames, file contents, results, and search-and-replace operations, including material that uses non-English characters.
ScanFS also supports search and replace across multiple files. Users can save search criteria and load them again later, which helps repeat common lookups without rebuilding the settings. Refine Search can narrow a catalog or an existing set of results, rather than starting over across all selected folders. Windows Explorer integration provides another way to open a search, including through the Explorer search button or the F3 key.
After locating items, users can copy, move, delete, or rename files and directories. Drag-and-drop support allows files to be moved into Explorer windows as part of a familiar file-management workflow.
