Areca Backup x64 for Windows 10 - Full description

Areca Backup x64 is an open-source backup utility for Windows systems that helps users protect selected files and folders. Backup sets can be saved as ordinary file copies or compressed archives, with options for incremental or full backups. Its combination of graphical controls and command-line operation suits both hands-on personal backups and repeatable automated jobs.

Archives can be compressed in ZIP or ZIP64 format and protected with Triple DES or AES encryption. Areca can store backups on local and network drives, USB storage, or FTP and FTPS servers, including connections using SSL or TLS. File filters narrow a backup by criteria such as extension, subdirectory, regular expression, size, date, status, or usage, which helps exclude unnecessary content or focus on particular files. Incremental backups record changes between runs, while full backups provide a complete backup set.

The archive browser lets users inspect stored contents and search for files. Areca also tracks file history across archives, including creation, modification, and deletion, and supports recovery of an archive or individual files as of a chosen date. Archives can be merged, and the latest archives can be deleted through the program's management tools. Each archive has a manifest with descriptive and technical information, while indicators and an action history help users review backup activity and manage stored sets.

For additional control, Areca can simulate a backup to check whether a run is needed, and its transaction mechanism supports commit and rollback for critical operations such as backups and archive merges. It can save backup reports to disk or send them by email, and run shell scripts after a backup. The command-line interface provides another way to automate backup tasks. Together, these features support routine personal backups, off-site storage over FTP, encrypted archives, and recovery of older file versions.

Areca Backup x64 is released as open-source software under the GNU General Public License version 2. The x64 edition is intended for 64-bit Windows and lists support for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Its Linux-only handling of file permissions and symbolic links does not apply to Windows backups.
