OpenBabelGUI gives Windows users a graphical way to work with Open Babel, an open-source chemical toolbox for molecular data. It can read, write and convert more than 90 chemical file formats, and search or filter molecular files with SMARTS patterns and other methods. Its tools support chemistry, molecular modeling, cheminformatics and bioinformatics workflows, including work with organic and inorganic compounds, solid-state materials and nuclear chemistry. The toolbox also includes a programmer's toolkit.

OpenBabelGUI provides a graphical way to use Open Babel, an open-source chemical toolbox for working with molecular data. It is intended for chemists, researchers, students and developers who need to convert, inspect or search files used in molecular modeling, chemistry, biochemistry and related fields. The interface makes core toolbox functions available without requiring every task to be run from a command line.
A central use is converting chemical data between file formats. Open Babel can read, write and convert more than 90 formats, helping users move structures between applications that store molecular information differently. This is useful when preparing input for another chemistry program, opening data from a different source or saving results in a format required by a collaborator. The available formats cover a broad range of chemical and molecular modeling data.
The toolbox can also filter and search molecular files using SMARTS patterns and other methods. These searches help identify structures or substructures of interest in larger collections. Analysis functions support examining molecular data, while the underlying toolkit can be used by programmers who need to incorporate chemical file handling and related capabilities into their own software.
Its scope extends across cheminformatics and bioinformatics as well as organic and inorganic chemistry, solid-state materials and nuclear chemistry. Typical tasks include converting collections of molecular files, locating compounds that match a structural pattern, and preparing chemical data for modeling or analysis workflows. The precise usefulness depends on the formats and operations required by a particular project.
OpenBabelGUI is freeware and is based on the collaborative Open Babel project. The supplied Windows compatibility information includes Windows 10, alongside earlier Windows releases; Windows 11 compatibility is not established here. The software is suited to users who need a desktop interface to Open Babel's chemical data conversion, searching and analysis capabilities.
