PCMark 8 for Windows 10 - Full description

PCMark 8 is a Windows benchmarking tool for comparing the performance and power efficiency of computers, from tablets and notebooks to desktop PCs. It is intended for home users, IT teams and hardware testers who need repeatable results for general computing or specific components. Its workloads model familiar tasks rather than relying only on abstract calculations, helping show how a system handles everyday applications and media work.

The Home benchmark combines workloads for web browsing, writing, gaming, photo editing and video chat into an overall score. It uses relatively modest computing demands, making it suitable for assessing lower-cost systems as well as mainstream PCs. Creative targets more demanding media and entertainment use, with tasks such as photo and video editing, media transcoding, group video chat, gaming and web browsing. Work focuses on office productivity, measuring tasks such as document writing, spreadsheets, website browsing and video chat. Each suite combines its workload results into a score for comparing systems.

For drive testing, the Storage benchmark uses activity traces from Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and selected games. It can evaluate SSDs, hard drives and hybrid drives, including the system drive and recognized local external storage. Because the test replays patterns drawn from software use, its results can help distinguish how storage devices perform in practical workloads. Expanded Storage tests are also available for more specialist drive analysis. Battery life testing provides a separate way to assess how long a tablet or notebook runs under a benchmark workload, complementing performance scores when efficiency matters.

PCMark 8 is useful when comparing complete computers, checking the effect of an upgrade, or evaluating storage devices for home, creative or office workloads. Businesses and reviewers can use its consistent test suites to compare hardware, while individual users can get a clearer sense of whether a device suits everyday work or more demanding media tasks. The benchmark is designed to be straightforward to install and run without complicated configuration.

The software is trialware. The Professional Edition is licensed for business and commercial use and includes all five performance benchmark tests. The supplied system requirements cover Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8, including 64-bit Windows 8; the benchmark is intended for Windows PCs.
