FlashGet is a freeware download manager for organizing file transfers from the web. It is aimed at people who regularly download files and want a central queue for tracking jobs, choosing where files are saved and resuming interrupted transfers. Its multi-server, multithreaded transfer method can split a download into parts and retrieve them concurrently where the source supports it, while the queue keeps downloads in a chosen order.
The program supports HTTP, FTP, BitTorrent, MMS and RTSP transfers. Users can add jobs to FlashGet and manage them alongside other downloads, rather than handling each transfer in a separate browser window. Queue order is controlled from the job list: higher entries are processed first, and toolbar controls move selected jobs up or down. Ctrl can move jobs to the top or bottom, while Shift and Ctrl allow multiple files to be selected for batch reordering.
Download organization is handled through categories, with each category able to use its own save directory. Categories can be added without a stated limit, making it possible to separate files by type or project. The management tools support drag-and-drop, descriptions, searching and renaming, so jobs and downloaded files can be sorted and found without relying only on their original URLs. After a transfer finishes, FlashGet can launch an installed antivirus program to scan the downloaded file.
FlashGet is suited to users who handle multiple downloads, need to resume transfers, or want files saved into predictable folders. Its protocol support also makes it useful for managing different kinds of sources in one queue, including HTTP and FTP downloads as well as supported peer-to-peer and streaming protocols. The interface is available in English, Spanish, German, French, Traditional Chinese and Italian. Clipboard monitoring can be used to add links; click monitoring is not available when running the Windows program through Wine on Linux.
The software is freeware and is intended for Windows. The supplied compatibility information includes Windows versions through Windows 10, but does not establish support for Windows 11. FlashGet can use an external antivirus application for post-download checks; this depends on an antivirus program being installed. Its queue controls and category-based filing are practical for keeping transfer work organized, while actual download performance depends on the network, server and source availability.
