Garmin POI Loader is a Windows utility for transferring custom points of interest to a compatible Garmin GPS device. It is useful for adding places that are missing from the device's existing map data, including restaurants, campsites, shopping centers, swimming pools and ATMs. POI files can come from online sources or be created by the user, giving drivers a way to keep relevant locations together with the device's built-in navigation information.
The program can also load points that include speed or proximity alert information. A proximity alert can notify the driver as the GPS approaches a location, while a speed alert can provide a warning when the vehicle exceeds a configured speed near that point. Such data can be used for locations like school zones and traffic signals. Once loaded, custom points can be searched for on the device and selected as navigation destinations.
Express mode handles straightforward transfers. It can load ordinary location files without requiring the user to edit alert settings, and it can use speed or proximity details included in the data when POI Loader recognizes them. The utility checks file names for speed values and alert-related terms, such as camera, redlight or safety. If those details are absent or incomplete, it treats the data as regular points of interest rather than assuming alert settings.
Manual mode is intended for cases where alert behavior needs adjustment. For each data file, the user can specify default speed and proximity settings, or override information indicated by the file name. For example, a speed value in a filename can be replaced with a different default during loading. This allows different groups of custom locations to use their own alert settings instead of applying one choice to every point.
Garmin POI Loader is freeware for Windows and is designed to work with Garmin GPS devices that support custom POIs.
