IrfanView is a compact image viewer and converter for people who need to browse, inspect, edit and process graphics without using a full-scale image-editing suite. It opens a broad range of image formats, including common files such as JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF, as well as many camera RAW, vector, document and specialist graphics formats. Its thumbnail view and fast directory browsing make it practical for reviewing images stored in folders or on removable drives.
The program includes basic editing tools for everyday corrections. Users can crop or straighten an image, change its dimensions or color depth, adjust colors, and apply effects such as sharpening and blur. Lossless JPEG operations can rotate or otherwise adjust compatible files without re-encoding their image data. The optional Paint plugin adds tools for drawing lines, circles and arrows, useful for marking up screenshots or pointing out details.
For larger collections, batch conversion and editing apply selected changes to multiple files in one operation. Slideshow mode presents images in sequence, while file search helps locate items across folders. IrfanView can also scan images, capture screen content, edit IPTC metadata, print or email files, and work with multipage images. Command-line options and keyboard shortcuts support repeatable tasks and quicker navigation; color-profile support helps preserve color handling across compatible workflows.
IrfanView’s format support can be extended with plugins. Depending on the installed components, it can handle additional image, audio and video formats, including media formats supported through Windows Media Player or QuickTime plugins. It can also create executable or screensaver files from image collections. These options make it useful for photographers sorting mixed-format folders, office users preparing or annotating images, and anyone who needs quick conversion or batch processing.
The software is freeware for non-commercial use and offers a multilingual interface, including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Polish and Korean. It is available for Windows, including Windows 10 and Windows 11. Some format support and tools depend on optional plugins, so capabilities can vary with the components installed.
