Recuva for Windows 10 - Full description

Recuva is a Windows file-recovery utility for restoring files that have been deleted accidentally or become inaccessible after a drive problem. It can scan a computer's storage as well as rewriteable media such as USB drives, external disks, digital camera memory cards and MP3 players. It is useful for home users who need to retrieve lost documents, photos, music or email files, and for photographers working with supported camera RAW files.

For a straightforward recovery, Recuva scans a selected drive and displays files it can locate. The results include an estimate of each file's recovery prospects, helping users decide what to restore first. Recovered files should be saved to a different drive or storage device where possible: writing new data to the original media can overwrite deleted content and reduce the chance of recovery. A scan cannot guarantee that every file will be restored, particularly if its data has been overwritten or the storage device is physically damaged.

When the normal file index is damaged or has been removed by formatting, Recuva can search the drive's contents rather than relying only on the index Windows uses to locate files. This can help find data after a quick format or file-system trouble, provided the underlying file contents remain intact. It also supports recovery from portable media, including music from an iPod or MP3 player and photos from camera cards. For email recovery, it supports Microsoft Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail.

Typical uses include retrieving a mistakenly deleted document, finding pictures on a camera card that Windows can no longer browse, and checking an external disk after a formatting mistake. The program can also help recover files removed from the Recycle Bin. Results depend on the condition of the drive and whether new data has been written since deletion, so prompt scanning and minimizing further use of the affected media are sensible precautions.

Recuva is freeware from Piriform and is made for Windows. It is suitable for common file-recovery tasks without requiring a specialist data-recovery workflow, but it is software-based recovery rather than a repair for failing hardware. If a drive is making unusual noises, repeatedly disconnecting or otherwise showing signs of physical failure, continued scanning may worsen the situation; professional recovery may be more appropriate. Recovery from encrypted, overwritten or severely damaged data is not assured.
