MPlayer for Windows 10 - Full description
MPlayer is an open-source media player for people who need broad support for video files, discs and subtitle formats. It handles common containers such as MPEG, AVI, Ogg, QuickTime, MP4, RealMedia and Matroska, along with a wide range of other formats. Playback can use built-in codecs as well as supported native, XAnim and Win32 DLL codecs, making it useful for older and less common media as well as familiar movie files.
The player supports video from formats and sources including VideoCD, SVCD and DVD, plus files encoded with DivX, WMV and H.264. Its output system can use different video drivers depending on the computer and display setup. Options include OpenGL, SDL, DirectFB and VESA, as well as platform-specific drivers; some provide software or hardware scaling for fullscreen viewing. On supported systems, MPlayer can also send video to compatible MPEG decoder boards.
On-screen display features show playback status and provide visual feedback for keyboard controls. Subtitles are supported in formats such as SubRip, MicroDVD, Sami, SSA and JACOsub, as well as DVD subtitle streams, VOBsub and closed captions. Users can select from supported font sets for Latin, Cyrillic and Korean text. These options make it practical to watch subtitled films and adjust playback to different display environments.
MPlayer is suited to desktop playback of downloaded movies, video collections and optical-disc content, particularly where format coverage or configurable output matters. Its range of drivers can help accommodate different graphics setups, while subtitle and OSD support assist with everyday viewing. The available features depend in part on the codecs and output drivers present on the system.
The software is free and open source, and is available for Windows, Linux and macOS. The Windows download is intended for Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. MPlayer also runs on older Windows releases, but those are outside this site's supported operating-system scope. Device-specific output options and some hardware decoder features require compatible hardware and drivers.
