IPFS Desktop 0.49.1

A graphical interface for IPFS file sharing

IPFS Desktop provides a graphical way to run an IPFS node and work with content on the peer-to-peer network. Users can add files by dragging them into the app, manage pinned content and check connected peers, transfer activity and pin status. It also works with the IPFS Companion browser extension to help open IPFS content from a browser.

IPFS Desktop for Windows 10 - Full description

IPFS Desktop is a graphical application for using the InterPlanetary File System, a peer-to-peer network for storing and retrieving content. It is aimed at people who want to add files to IPFS, manage a local node, or explore the decentralized web without relying only on command-line tools. The application brings common node and file tasks together in a desktop interface, while the underlying IPFS network identifies content by its data rather than by a single server location.

The built-in IPFS node lets the computer connect to the network and participate in content exchange. Users can add files through the interface, including by dragging and dropping them, then share the resulting content address so others can retrieve the data through IPFS. Content may be available from other peers as well as the original computer, depending on whether peers have the data and are online. This distributed model can make content less dependent on one hosting server, but it does not guarantee that every file will always be available.

IPFS Desktop also provides controls for pinned files. Pinning tells the local node to retain content, helping keep it available from that computer rather than allowing it to be removed as part of storage management. The dashboard displays information about connected peers, data transfers and pin status, giving users a practical view of node activity. These details can help identify whether the node is connected and which content it is retaining.

The application can be used for sharing files, testing IPFS content, and maintaining data for projects that use decentralized storage. Its integration with the IPFS Companion browser extension can make it easier to open IPFS content from a browser, while the desktop app handles the local node and its content. IPFS is not an automatic privacy or encryption layer: content added to the network should not be treated as private unless it is encrypted separately, and availability depends on peers or pinning.

IPFS Desktop is open-source software from IPFS Shipyard. It is available for Windows, including Windows 10 and Windows 11, and the supplied system information also lists Windows 7 and Windows 8 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. The graphical controls provide an approachable alternative to configuring every IPFS task manually, while still giving users visibility into node connections and stored content.
